AI speeds up remodeling design process - remodeling design
Remodelers reduce initial design phase from weeks to minutes with AI.

According to a report, remodelers utilizing AI to present material and design choices to clients in real-time are significantly reducing the initial design phase from weeks to mere minutes during the first meeting. This efficiency allows remodelers to more effectively grasp their clients’ preferences and requirements, streamlining the overall process.

A writer and contractor, Grace Tsao Mase, has talked about the practical side of AI in remodeling, highlighting its potential to help remodelers find profit in incentives and build stronger trust with clients. She notes that there are billions of dollars available through states and jurisdictions that the industry doesn’t dig deep enough to find.

AI Adoption in Remodeling

Mase has built an AI platform, HomeRES.ai, to help remodelers identify incentives and build them into the estimate, along with cost estimation. The platform also handles pre-construction document review, checking for constructability issues and cross-referencing against the architect’s, designer’s, or engineer’s work.

According to Mase, AI will change the job of remodelers, but it will not replace them. Human judgment, taste, and client relationships still matter most, while AI’s strength is in the tedious work, such as cross-referencing plans, estimating, and catching constructability issues before they become change orders.

AI Adoption Grows Slowly

Mase’s book, AI in Residential Construction, cites a statistic that only 2% of construction companies had integrated AI as of early 2025. While more contractors are using AI now, most are using it for email, marketing, and maybe accounting, not for deeper field applications yet.

A recent Anthropic study found that high-touch, physical work is not likely to be replaced by AI. Human judgment and interpretation and critical thinking still matter, and there’s still a sense of style and taste that AI cannot replace.

Mase notes that AI can help remodelers to reframe the conversation with clients around what they actually care about, rather than just presenting them with options. By using AI to generate images in real time, clients can see what their kitchen can look like, and homeowners get genuinely excited seeing it.

One of the key benefits of using AI in remodeling is that it can help to reduce the time and cost associated with repeat inspections and change orders. Contractors can snap photos of problems or walkthroughs and use AI to get instant feedback on what to fix, cutting down on repeat inspections and change orders.

By automating the tedious tasks, remodelers can focus on the creative and problem-solving aspects of their job.

Solving Labor Shortages

Less experienced workers can use AI as an on-the-job training tool, helping them to get up to speed faster, which is important since the industry is short on skilled labor. Mase notes that this is a great way for newcomers to learn faster and quickly ramp up, and it can help to address the labor shortage in the industry.

When researching her book, Mase was impressed by how remodelers were utilizing AI in their businesses, particularly in terms of generating images in real time and reframing the conversation with clients.

Mase advises remodelers interested in utilizing AI but are unsure how to start to download AI tools such as Claude, Perplexity, or ChatGPT, and just start talking to it like they would their superintendent. She notes that no prompting expertise is required, and remodelers can ask AI to ask them questions before it starts recommending anything.

Remodelers can use AI to research incentives, such as tax credits, grants, and rebates, that are available through states and jurisdictions.
