Anne Hathaway’s Most Notable Properties

Anne Hathaway splits her time between Los Angeles and New York City, but her primary residence remains a Southern California property that made its debut in 2019 on Architectural Digest. Hathaway shares the home with her husband, jewelry designer Adam Shulman, and their two children, with a third on the way. While the actor has been filming five movies slated for 2026, Shulman remains at home to manage the household. In an interview with People, she noted that this year was unusual and that they both know the balance of work and family life is unlikely to repeat itself. She described Shulman’s support as extraordinary, emphasizing that he holds the fort in every possible way.

A History of High-Rise Living

Before settling in Ojai, Hathaway spent time in Midtown Manhattan. In the mid-2000s, she and her then-boyfriend Raffaello Follieri rented a $37,000-a-month five-bedroom duplex in the Olympic Tower. Built in 1976, this glass tower was Manhattan’s first all-glass structure and offered views of Central Park and the Empire State Building. The dwelling included walls of glass, a movie theater, and five en suite bedrooms. The arrangement came to a dramatic end in 2008 when Follieri was convicted of fraud and sent to prison. During the investigation, Hathaway’s personal diaries were seized by the FBI.

Following the breakup, Hathaway and Shulman married in 2012 and acquired a loft in Dumbo’s Clocktower Building. They reportedly never moved into the 2,592-square-foot, two-bedroom unit, instead using it as a large dressing room. The corner unit featured a primary suite with multiple closets, a vanity nook, a bathroom with a soaking tub, and a combination library and media room. The couple listed the property for $4.5 million in 2013 but de-listed it shortly after. They eventually sold the unit in October 2014 for $4.33 million.

The Ojai Sanctuary

The couple relocated to the West Coast in 2014, purchasing their current home in Ojai for $3.6 million. Spanning 3,400 square feet, the Swiss chalet-style structure originally built in 1906 (and rebuilt in 1917 after a fire) now hosts four bedrooms and four bathrooms. Hathaway and Shulman hired AD100 designer Pamela Shamshiri to renovate the space, drawing inspiration from Yves Saint Laurent, David Bowie, and Wes Anderson. Shamshiri installed a dreamy music room with a disco ball and piano, which Hathaway described as the heart of the house where friends gather.

Inside the residence, the primary bedroom is pink, while the living room features wood paneling and exposed beams. A windowed breakfast nook and a pergola-topped terrace with an outdoor fireplace round out the interior. Shulman described the location as the ideal combination of romance and great design, a place where he envisioned raising a family. Hathaway added that the home balances isolation and community, providing a retreat for intense focus away from the distractions of the city.

The shift from urban lofts to the quiet mountains of Ojai reflects a broader trend among actors who transition from high-profile, transient lifestyles to permanent bases. While the hustle of New York or Los Angeles offers proximity to work, the long-term stability of a family home in a quieter region often becomes a priority as professional commitments intensify. This decision requires a significant capital outlay, yet the psychological benefit of a stable environment for children often outweighs the financial cost of maintaining two properties.

Back to the City

Two years after selling their Dumbo apartment, Hathaway and Shulman purchased a penthouse on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. They paid $2.55 million for the 1,200-square-foot unit in a neo-Georgian row house built in 1904. The co-op features two bedrooms, a private terrace, skylights, and 18-foot ceilings. The couple renovated the home, adding white oak herringbone flooring and French casement windows, before listing it in February 2020 for about $3.5 million. It sold in June 2021 for just under that asking price.

In November 2017, Hathaway expanded her portfolio with a Colonial-style home in Westport, Connecticut. The couple paid $2.8 million for a 4,500-square-foot property with five bedrooms and six bathrooms. The residence sat on one acre with a romantic English garden, a barn, an attached guesthouse, and a saltwater pool. The interior included a formal dining room and a primary suite with a dressing hall. They sold the property a year later for $2.7 million, though reports indicate they still owned another home in the area at the time.
