Garden kneelers are essential for protecting knees during long weeding sessions, and nine models were tested for comfort, durability, portability, maintenance, and value.
From foam pads to wool cushions: the top garden kneelers
A good kneeler should cushion kneecaps without losing its shape, and be easy to carry, store, and clean. Firm, straight-edged foam pads offer edge-to-edge protection, while softer foam or wool-filled kneelers provide more comfort but less edge protection.
Larger kneelers offer more knee room but can be cumbersome. The Genus Garden Kneeler, at 50x30x7cm, is the largest and thickest tested, with a tough foam base and polyester/TPU-coated sides that are wipe-clean. Knee pads that strap to legs are an alternative to cushions.
The Niwaki Garden Kneeler features a 48.5x29x5.4cm firm foam pad with a zipped coated canvas cover and a red cotton carrying handle. The Evergreen Kneelo Kneeler has 30% more foam than its original design, an EVA foam core, and a quick-dry nylon coating.
The Romney Marsh Wools Garden Kneeler Cushion, filled with Romney Marsh sheep wool, is 48x28x10cm and has a tweed top and waterproof canvas bottom. The Waterproof Garden Kneeler from Garden Trading is 40x26x4.5cm, made of khaki canvas with faux suede accents, and is water-resistant.
The Spear and Jackson Kew Gardens Collection Kneeler is made of EVA foam, a neoprene lining for water resistance, and a quick-dry polyester cover. The Sophie Conran Kneeler features a cotton cover, EVA foam core, and a long webbed cotton carry handle.
Knee pads and no-frills options
Knee pads, like the Kneelo model, offer versatility with an EVA core, neoprene lining, and Velcro straps. The Draper 20mm Dense Garden Kneeler is a 35.3 x 32.6 x 2.1cm EVA foam slab with an integrated carry handle, effective against water, stones, and thorns.
Reinforced trousers, such as those from Decathlon, provide additional knee protection with tough polyester panels. The tested kneelers vary in size, material, and features, catering to different gardening needs and preferences.
